Go back to Dune

Want a guide to the characters in Cryo’s Dune, written by someone who’s never read the books and watched the recent Part 1 movie once? Your wish is my command!

(I don’t think anything here really counts as a spoiler, but if you don’t want to know anything at all about the game as it unfolds, then consider yourself warned…)

Duke Leto Atreides

Leto is, as he reminds you, your father. Despite a slightly austere and formal manner, he nevertheless tells you at one point that all of his hopes rest on you. Gee, thanks, Pop!

Lady Jessica

If Leto represents the practical and political side of things, Jessica (your mother) encourages your spiritual side, telling you to wander out into the desert and become one with the planet. Can also be used to ‘sense’ hidden rooms in the palace.

Gurney Halleck

Your initial right-hand man as diplomatic and military advisor. Later used to bolster the military training of the Fremen, if you station him at a sietch: “Okay, Paul, I’ll stay here!” Just don’t forget where you’ve left him.

Duncan Idaho

Largely obsessed with spice stocks, sending spice to the Emperor, and paying smugglers in spice. Has seemingly little interest in fighting or military training, unlike his movie counterpart.

Thifur Hawat

Blonde youth Cyril begone! Mentat Thifur is in this incarnation a slightly creepy old man with dodgy teeth, who advises you on strategic matters, while openly wondering about the Emperor’s intentions.

Stilgar

Leader of the Fremen, a handy ally when visiting sietches and a useful source of advice. Although not when it comes to whether you should drink the Water of Life.

Harah

Your initial Fremen lady-friend, who later asks to return to her sietch, never to be heard from again.

Chani

Paul’s second female suitor, who seems to fall in love with you rather quickly. Tells you you are ‘the one’ quite a lot.

Emperor Shaddam IV

The Emperor sent for House Atreides and put them in charge of spice production on Arrakis, much to the displeasure of the Harkonnen. He appears periodically to demand spice, but what else is he up to?

Liet Kynes

The rather hairy ecologist who holds the secret to growing plant life on Arrakis.

Baron Harkonnen

The plump and seemingly mankini-clad Harkonnen leader is rarely seen, except when issuing vague threats.

Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen

Ditto Feyd-Rautha, who is admittedly slightly more proactive in this regard. Played by Sting in the 1984 film; here, he kind of looks more like a Terminator-era Michael Biehn.
